Sturgeon Electric crews provided electrical construction services for the $1.3 billion Central 70 Project, which reconstructed and expanded 10 miles of Interstate 70 (I-70). Project features included removing a 57-year-old viaduct, constructing new express lanes in each direction, lowering 2.5 miles of the highway between Brighton and Colorado boulevards, and placing a four-acre park over part of the lowered highway.
CDOT considers Brighton Boulevard to Chambers Road — the highway segment that encompasses the project — one of Colorado’s economic backbones. It is home to 1,200 businesses, provides a regional connection to Denver International Airport, and carries up to 200,000 vehicles daily. Central 70 was designed to modernize and economically revitalize the area; improve infrastructure and capacity; enhance safety, mobility, access to transportation, and North-South and East-West connectivity; and reconnect the Elyria-Swansea neighborhoods that were divided when the viaduct was built in the 1960s.
Sturgeon Electric will continue to operate and maintain portions of Central 70 for two years after its completion in 2023.
