The Commercial and Industrial (C&I) segment of Sturgeon Electric Company, Inc. (Sturgeon Electric) received two ACE Awards at the annual Associated General Contractors (AGC) Colorado Industry Gala & ACE Awards (Award for Construction Excellence) in November.
The Sturgeon Electric Arizona C&I group earned a Bronze Award in the Best Building Project (Under $2 Million – Subcontractor) category for safely rising to the challenges of the Memorial Union Electrical Services Upgrades (ASU-MU) Arizona State University project and completing the work ahead of schedule. The team was able to keep the facility up and running while removing five, three-section pieces of 60-year –old switchgear.
The ACE Award was presented to Sturgeon Electric in the Best Building Project ($6 -$10 Million – Subcontractor) category for the innovative processes on the Denver Health Support Services Building at 601 Broadway project. The Colorado C&I group’s submission earned the highest Gold Award among eight other excellent project submissions in the category. By implementing lean construction initiatives and collaborating with project partners, Sturgeon Electric was able to resolve and greatly reduce the number of deliveries required for this project which resulted in cost savings and added flexibility for the project team. Just-In-Time delivery (a lean process) allowed for materials to arrive exactly when ready for installation. Utilizing reusable containers eliminated excess materials on-site and freed up floor space. The overtime originally anticipated for this project was never exercised thanks to these innovations.
