In 2020, Sturgeon Electric built two new high-voltage, greenfield substations Aeolus and Anticline, and expanded an existing substation at the Jim Bridger Generating Station for PacifiCorp and Burns & McDonnell in Wyoming.
The 500/230kV Aeolis, near Medicine Bow, and the 500/345kV Anticline, near Point Rocks, provide grid support for the addition of more than 1 GW of new wind generation capacity to the regional power network under PacifiCorp’s Energy Vision 2020 initiative. The upgrades to the Jim Bridger substation provide added grid stability.
Among the work Sturgeon Electric performed at each site:
- Aeolus Substation: For the new 525kV yard, crews installed a main bus, two breakers, and a half bay; a shunt reactor bank; 525/230kV auto transformer; one transmission line terminus; and a control building. For the new 230kV yard, they installed the main bus, sectionalizing breakers; three transmission line terminuses; a shunt reactor; and a 230kV control building.
- Anticline Substation: For the new 525kV yard, crews installed the main bus, one transmission line terminus; a shunt reactor bank; 525/345kV auto transformer; shunt cap bank; and control building. For the new 345kV yard, they installed the main bus; one transmission terminus; two 345kV phase-shifting transformers; and a bypass bus.
- Jim Bridger Substation: To expand the existing 345kV substation, crews extended the existing bus, relocated two existing shunt capacitors, and added a new breaker and a half bay.
Sturgeon Electric provided all below-grade material and all electrical construction for all three substations.
