Sturgeon Electric and Arizona Public Service (APS) have partnered since 2003 on numerous distribution, transmission, and substation systems projects throughout APS’s service territory. They include pole replacement, overhead and underground distribution, and North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) migration projects, ranging from secondary to 500kV.
Sturgeon Electric constructed one of its largest distribution projects under the alliance. From 2016 to 2018, crews replaced wood structures for 12 miles through Oak Creek Canyon north of Sedona in Coconino County, AZ. Of the 94 structures that were replaced, 75 were accessible only by helicopter. The fully energized project also included reconducting 1.2 miles of inaccessible line.
