Darnestown Substation Substation

Client Potomac Electric Power Company (PEPCO)
Completion Date May 2017
Location Rockville, Maryland
Completed by Harlan Electric Company

Harlan Electric built the Darnestown EPC 69/138kV Substation to help modernize the area’s electrical infrastructure and provide additional capacity for the future. The project scope included all underground conduit, foundations, ground grid, steel, bus, 69kV breakers, switches, CCVT and metering, control cable terminations, pre-commissioning, and testing.

The substation was a challenge to construct because it was built simultaneously with its enclosure, a barn-like structure designed to cloak the substation and blend with the surrounding community. Because of this, Harlan Electric crews coordinated closely with the onsite civil and technical services subcontractors.
