Four MYR Group Subsidiaries Earn ENR Best Project Nods in 2021
Sturgeon Electric Also Ranks 3rd on ENR Mountain States Top Specialty Contractors 2021
From the historic hospital made famous by the television show “ER,” to a carbon conscious college athletics center, MYR Group subsidiaries provided electrical services for some of the best construction projects in 2021, and one of the 20 that made the “Best of the Best” list.
Each year Engineering News Record (ENR) honors best projects in a variety of categories. In 2021, the industry publication recognized electrical construction projects involving work by four MYR Group subsidiaries: CSI Electrical Contractors, E.S. Boulos, Huen Electric, and Sturgeon Electric. ENR Mountain States also ranked Sturgeon third on its 2021 list of top specialty contractors.
CSI Electrical Contractors (CSI) partnered with DPR Construction on Harvey Mudd College’s new 36,000 square-foot Scott A. McGregor Computer Science Center in California. ENR California named the academic building expansion as one of 2021’s best projects.
During the project, CSI installed decorative lighting fixtures in the wood slat ceilings, a cove light at the top ceiling of stairs, bench lighting, and architectural outdoor lighting. CSI also provided a 1,200-amp service tied into an emergency generator for this newly constructed building.
E.S. Boulos (ESB) served as a design-assist contractor for Colby College’s Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center, a LEED Gold-targeted facility. ESB was responsible for the new electrical distribution and generator systems, lighting and controls, fire alarm system, security system, and complete tele-data system for the project.
With carbon neutral features and a Sustainable SITES certification, the athletics complex was recognized by ENR New England in three categories: Excellence in Sustainability Award of Merit, Best Sports/Entertainment Project, and Excellence in Safety.
Huen Electric was involved in the restoration and conversion of Old Cook County Hospital in Chicago, the site of the world’s first blood bank and the popular medical drama “ER.” The project was named in the renovation/restoration best projects category by ENR Midwest and was chosen as one of the 20 projects nationwide to make the “Best of the Best” list.
After years of neglect and decay, the building (complete with Beaux-arts façade), was turned into two Hyatt hotels, offices, a hospital museum, food hall, and daycare. Huen installed electrical power, lighting, voice/data, CCTV, cable TV, and fire alarm system for the landmark project.
Sturgeon Electric performed electrical work as subcontractor for the Las Vegas Convention Center Phase II expansion project which ENR Southwest recognized in three categories: Excellence in Safety, Excellence in Sustainability, and Best Sports/Entertainment Project.
Sturgeon performed all the low voltage conduit, raceway, and cable tray work for DAS, WAP, security cameras and access control for the expansion, and managed the fire alarm systems work. They also installed conduit and raceway for the building management systems that allow for efficient energy management.
The convention center became the first to earn LEED and Green Globes certifications. The entire expansion was completed in 26 months – a “breakneck” speed – according to ENR.
